Patrick Kavanagh’sTHE GREAT HUNGER – A One Man Show by Peter Duffy – MONDAY 7th January 2013.

Doors 8pm – performance 830pm.

TICKETS: €7.00 (€5 for unwaged, OAP’s,students)

This epic poem, a masterpiece of Irish literature, is set in – -rural Co. Monaghan in the late 1930’s, early 40’s. With echoes of the “Great Famine” the poem concerns the life and struggles of the anti-hero and small farmer Patrick Maguire. This unsentimental portrait of small farm life in 1930’s is full of lyrical beauty, drama and mystical insight.

With the simple use of props, costume, light and sound, the life and characters of the place are evoked, but with room for the imagination and experience of the audience. The intention is to bring the poem alive for the audience, in a way that is accessible, insightful and entertaining – without sacrificing the poetry.
