Great Weekend

​ On Saturday 18th and Sunday 19th of October the Kilmainham Arts Festival, now in its fifth year, took place​ with the support of DCC.  It was organised by Kilmainham Arts Club.  The highlights included a short film event in Kilmainham Hilton on Saturday 18th at which no less than nine award winning Irish films, including animations from ​O​scar nominated Brown Bag films, were screened for a large appreciative audience.  Many of the filmakers attended the event at which the guest speaker was screenwriter/producer Brendan McCarthy​ formerly ​Film Adviser to the Arts Council of Ireland​ and currently head of Fantastic Films.​  The exciting new poet Dimitra Xidous read from her debut collection ‘Keeping Bees’ on Sunday 19th in the Patriots Inn and her performance was accompanied by contemporary harpist Turlough Eccles. ​’Portraits of a Time in Bohemia​’,​ ​ the show by ​ award winning South African pianist and songwriter Christof van der Berg​, was the triumph of the weekend in the Patriots Inn on ​ Sunday 19th.  The back lounge was transformed into an intimite cabaret theatre with decorations and candlelit tables for the event.

October 18th and 19th Mini Arts Fest

KILMAINHAM ARTS CLUB hosts a mini arts fest consisting of three wonderful free events on Saturday October 18th and Sunday October 19th 2014. The events take place in Kilmainham Hilton and the Patriots Inn. There is no cover charge, and as we won’t take bookings please arrive early; places are limited.

KILMAINHAM SHORT FILM EVENT

Kilmainham Hilton Hotel on Saturday 18th 7.30pm – 9.45pm

From Fingal Film Fest 2014 Roadshow, we will screen a selection of short listed and winning films from this year’s Fingal Film Festival. In addition, we have a range of shorts including: the premiere of a documentary shot in Ghana by Brian Cronley and IFTA nominated animation by Damien O’Connor. Gavin Hoffman, 3d artist and compositor, will show his award winning film Complicit and chat about the 3d process. Our guest speaker is Brendan McCarthy – screen writer, producer and Film Adviser to Arts Council of Ireland.

Come and enjoy a complimentary glass of wine and a poetry performance from the exciting new poet Dimitra Xidous. Dimitra will perform some poems from her debut collection ‘Keeping Bees’ (2014, Doire Press) which is gathering excellent reviews and there will be music by harpist Turlough Eccles.

The lounge of the Patriots Inn will be transformed into a theatre for a unique cabaret theatre show.

Through evocative songs five complex characters are depicted; the beauty inherent is celebrated despite their flaws. Christof van der Berg, whose performance has been likened to Jack L and Nick Cave, is an award winning South African pianist and original songwriter. ‘Portraits of a Time in Bohemia’ is touring Ireland after its celebrated debut in Cape Town’s Masque Theatre 2013.

MINI ARTS FEST

SATURDAY OCTOBER 18th – SUNDAY OCTOBER 19th

Kilmainham Arts festival, now in its fifth year, hosts  three wonderful  events in Kilmainham.   The events take place in Kilmainham Hilton and the Patriots Inn and we thank these venues, and especially Dublin City Council for their invaluable support.

KILMAINHAM SHORT FILM EVENT

Kilmainham Hilton on Saturday 18th 7.30pm – 9.45pm
No cover charge, places are limited, please arrive early.

Kilmainham Arts Club will screen a selection of short films by talented Irish film makers in a variety of genres.  In association with Fingal Film Fest 2014 Roadshow, we will screen a selection of short listed and winning films from this year’s Fingal Film Festival:  Skunky Dog, I’ve been a Sweeper and Barróg Béir.

In addition we have a range of shorts which include:
A short documentary made by Brian Cronley and shot in Ghana, about a Rastafarian’s band, which will premier at the event.
IFTA nominated animation After You from Damien O’Connor of the award winning Brown Bag film company.

Our special guest speaker is Brendan McCarthy – screen writer, producer and Film Adviser to Arts Council of Ireland. McCarthy will show the award winning short film Pitch N Putt with Beckett and Joyce which he produced, and chat about the making of Wakewood, co-produced with Hammer Film productions, for which he wrote the screenplay.

Come and enjoy a complimentary glass of wine and a poetry performance from the exciting new poet Dimitra Xidous. Dimitra’s poems have appeared in many literary journals in Canada, Ireland and the US. She was a finalist in The Malahat Review’s 2014 Open Season Awards, has been shortlisted for the Bridport Prize (2013), ‘Over the Edge’ Emerging New Writer Award (2013), and longlisted for the Montreal International Poetry Competition (2011). She was the featured poet in the Spring 2014 issue of The Stinging Fly. Dimitra will perform some poems from her debut collection ‘Keeping Bees’ (2014, Doire Press)
